When it comes time to buy new conservatory furniture we want it to look beautiful. We also want it to be reasonably priced. We also need furniture that is hardwearing and that will grow old gracefully. Apart from that we want something that we can easily maintain and keep clean.
There are many options available from natural materials such as wood to manmade materials such as steel or plastic. Each material has its own characteristics and qualities. Yet none give a conservatory the feel that wicker furniture can give.
Largely underrated is furniture woven from rattan or cane however wicker furniture is not an actual material. Rather it describes the weaving process undertaken in the construction of cane furniture. It is more apt to describe furniture as cane furniture if one wants to be specific about the material being used.
Cane conservatory furniture is tough by nature and is found in abundance in many Asian countries. Cane is also considered a sustainable material. It has a certain amount of elasticity when heated which makes it possible to weave into various configurations in and around a sturdy frame. However even though cane in its natural form is coarse and refuses to bend natives of Asian discovered a way to manipulate it to their advantage.
They heated it up. This softened the cane and made it pliable. Once in this state it is possible to weave and wrap. After the cane cools it once again returns to its original toughness.
Because of these properties cane conservatory furniture is easy to maintain. All that is needed is a dust or a wipe down with a damp cloth. Cane will not absorb dust or liquids or stain.

Keeping natural wicker furniture in good condition is easy. Rattan or cane furniture needs nothing more than a wipe with a damp cloth. It is not suggested that you use products to polish. Part of the beauty of wicker furniture is its matt finish. Giving a highly polished look will make it look unnatural.
Wicker furniture should be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment so as not to cause any damage to it. Furniture relegated to conservatory settings can get surprisingly dusty. If you are using your wicker furniture outdoors you may need to first get rid of surface dust. To do this all it takes is a mild detergent in warm water and a wash down with a soft cloth.
You may need to use a soft toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crannies. Once you have soaped your wicker furniture you can turn it upside down and spray it with the garden hose. Be sure to allow all excess water to run off and dry it thoroughly with a clean towel. Cane furniture will benefit from this treatment once in a while too.
One of the keys to ensuring your wicker furniture stays looking good for years to come depends on where it is situated. Cane furniture does not fare well outdoors while rattan furniture does. Strong sun can impact cane fibres and fade it while frost can make it brittle.
In a conservatory setting wicker furniture thrives. Your wicker furniture will be kept safe from outdoor elements such as strong sun, rain, snow and frost. Keeping it in pristine condition won’t be difficult if you follow the tips given above.

Cane is a tall perennial grass with a flexible and wood stalk. It belongs to the family Poaceae which prefers growing in wet soil. Cane is related to certain species of bamboo and is native to countries in the Mediterranean region across to the Far East. The word cane is an English word derived from the biblical Hebrew word “Qanah” which can be translated to reed.
Because of its rigid flexibility cane can be used for a variety of purposes. Walking sticks are very common items and in fact can be attributed to the term caning in terms of corporal punishment.
In regard to cane furniture it’s stiff, strong yet flexible stalks make it an ideal material to work with and produce furniture that is hard wearing, sustainable and long lasting.
Caning is a method of weaving wicker. Wicker is derived from the rattan vines endemic to Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The term caning or cane is somewhat incorrectly used to describe any woven seat.
In the construction of wicker or cane furniture it is usual to first construct a frame from a much stiffer material. The more pliable materials of wicker or cane are then used to fill in the frame creating seats, chair backs or table tops. Wicker is lighter than cane yet is very sturdy. It is more suitable for outdoor use and because of this is commonly used in areas that are subject to the elements such as sun rooms, conservatories or patios.
Wicker furniture has been constructed as far back as Egyptian times and has even been attributed to influencing the patterns we see in Celtic art. The arts and crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century can be thanked for the beautiful pieces of furniture so readily available on the market today.

Rattan, or rather, rattan core is one of the oldest natural materials used in the manufacture of furniture. Rattan is related to palm trees found in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Philippines as well as Indonesia. These vines grow much like plants in single or multi stemmed configurations which can span several hundred feet in length. They grow upwards and produce spine like teeth that enable them to grip onto its host tree. The core of these long stems is used to construct rattan furniture.
Once rattan vines have had a certain amount of growth they are cut down into lengths of about 18 feet and left to dry. They are then peeled into thin strips ready for weaving.
On the other hand Wicker is a weaving process and not a material. When you hear of wicker furniture, what is being referred to is furniture that has been woven. When comparing say rattan furniture to wicker furniture one is speaking about a product and a process. Rattan furniture is made from rattan while wicker furniture can be made from other raw materials such as cane.
Cane can be used instead of rattan and many manufacturers call their furniture cane rattan furniture. Cane undergoes the same weaving process as rattan yet it is a different material. Cane furniture can trace its roots back almost 3,000 years but it is most commonly associated with India and China. It wasn’t until around 1600 that cane furniture made its way to the western world.
Rattan furniture is highly suitable for indoor and outdoor use while cane furniture should be confined to indoor use. Frames are often made from strong wood, metal or aluminium and the designs are modern and very attractive. Thanks to the sleek designer looks of today cane and rattan furniture is once again back in vogue.
